Letter
from the
President
The UNICA Committee met from May 19 to 21, 2005 in Nyon (Switzerland) at the invitation of Fred Graber, the officer in charge of "Friends of UNICA". The meeting was held parallel to a get-together of the Friends and gave an opportunity to have interesting discussions and friendly social events. Here is a summary of the issues discussed: We are pleased to announce that the transfer of the accounts held by the late treasurer, Achim Stampehl, to the new one, Thomas Kraeuchi, has been completed. Mr. Kraeuchi was elected at the previous Committee meeting. We offer best wishes to our new "chancellor of the UNICA exchequer" as he begins his term of office. Jef van Gompel reported on preparations for the UNICA 2005 Congress in Blankenberge and told us that there were at that moment some 150 registered participants. We can reasonably expect this number to go on rising to above 200. The jury for the UNICA Film Competition consists of people from the following countries: Belgium (2 people), Croatia, Poland, Great Britain, Finland (possibly Switzerland) and Austria. It was decided not to organise audience voting on films this year. Have you registered yet for the event? It is now high time to do so and Blankenberge is looking forward to seeing you for the UNICA 2005 Congress! The experience of recent years has shown that the Committee should start making preparations for the 2006 UNICA Congress in Korea at least one year in advance. This is absolutely necessary because bookings for flights and hotel should be finalised much earlier than when the congress is held in Europe. About 200 people have already registered on a provisional basis and it is now time to finalise registration. Hotel rooms have already been reserved in Korea and the booking of flights should be done in August / September. However, we will make arrangements to allow latecomers to register. Participation in the UNICA Congress in Korea will undoubtedly be an extraordinary experience as we will be steeped in an environment and culture which is unfamiliar to most of us. Information and registration forms are available from Max Hänsli, Kuerbergstrasse 30, CH 8049 Zurich. Another way to go to Korea is by joining the "Train to Korea" project originated by Franz Schlager. Those interested in this project can also register via Max Hänsli (address below). Plans for UNICA 2007 in Slovakia are well-advanced. The Committee will hold a meeting in Slovakia before the end of the year. You will have more information right after that meeting. The question of UNICA 2008 in Tunisia was also raised during the meeting. We have been told about the venue selected and we hope to have soon more detailed information about the organisation soon. Various countries / federations are willing to join UNICA but it is often difficult to keep up contacts, explore and follow up on any opening and application. Changing the name of UNICA will again be on the agenda of the General meeting in Blankenberge and the Committee hope that their proposal will be accepted. The problem is that any possible substitute expression is interpreted in different ways in various countries. For this reason, the Committee - after a near-unanimous vote - decided to avoid any adjective. The proposal, which the committee adopted by 8 votes to 1, is: UNICA UNION INTERNATIONALE DU CINÉMA Thus nothing has basically changed in the name except dropping the adjective "non professionnel". The Committee hope that they have found a happy medium. We would be pleased to have this proposal adopted by your federation. Thank you, Sincerely yours Max Hänsli (CHE), UNICA President
Thomas Kräuchi introduces himself Ladies and gentlemen As you probably know, our UNICA Treasurer Hans-Joachim Stampehl met his untimely death last October. Herr Stampehl had spared no effort in the organisation of the UNICA 2004 Congress in Germany as well as being in charge of the UNICA Treasury. At the Committee meeting in November 2004, the UNICA Committee asked me to take charge of the UNICA Treasury. As a regular participant in all the events organised by UNICA since 1981 and also as the Committee member in charge of technical issues for UNICA, I am familiar with all UNICA matters. This proposal, however, took me rather by surprise, especially as I was also asked to remain in charge of technical issues. It is now up to the General meeting at the UNICA Congress in Belgium to consider confirming my taking over the office of UNICA Treasurer. You probably know me from UNICA events but are perhaps not so well informed about my occupation. With some colleagues I created a company manufacturing and marketing machines for the automatic cutting of straps for professional use. Our customers are, inter alia, companies in the automotive industry, the biomedical sector (in particular filtering of blood products, orthopaedics, phlebology), and to factories manufacturing belts and straps of all kinds - in fact all firms needing that line of products. The technology applied is based on ultrasound for the cutting and bonding of materials. Most of our customers are in Europe and in the Middle East. My leisure activities include accountancy work for several associations and I am the president of a riding club. Many thanks in advance for your cooperation. Please do not hesitate to get in touch if you have questions or you need clarification so that I can respond immediately. My preferred languages are German and English. UNICA
2006 - KOREA
All participants who registered (provisionally) for the UNICA 2006 Congress and provided an e-mail address should have received a set of documents (14 pages) with detailed information and specific data about UNICA 2006 including a breakdown of costs for the flight, the tour and the Congress itself. I did my best to answer the various questions that are likely to be raised regarding the journey. Please do not hesitate to get in touch with me if you did not receive this or if you need further information. Sincerely yours Max Hänsli (CHE) UNICA President,

Start shooting for
photokina videofun 2006!
Moments in paradise are on the agenda. Show us your paradise: the topic of Europe's video competition "photokina videofun 2006" for hobby filmmakers is "Moments in paradise". For some people paradise is taking a bath in champagne, for others it is the voluptuous consumption of a bar of chocolate or a steak. There are also people who associate paradise with the beauty of nature or the cosiness of their armchair. For a few it might be the "broad shoulder" of their partner, many might see their paradise as a veranda or sunset on a beach. The dictionary of foreign loan words makes the point: paradise is a place of bliss, and there are - as everybody knows - scores of such places. "Moments in paradise" are numerous indeed - that does not necessarily make it easier to capture and realise them in a film which must not be longer than three minutes. First of all, it is about finding ideas which work on the principle of association of thoughts. Toy with your ideas and thoughts. Write down everything, even the impossible since that may be the whole fun of it. The next step is to implement the idea - which will, of course, require a lot of creativity. Do not feel irritated if the screenplay develops and changes in the course of the shooting - that is just a part of making a film (even if it only lasts three minutes). The basic rules of cinematography are countless but you do not have to stick to them absolutely. However, the one you should follow is building up tension. Work with film sequences towards the climax - and your contribution does not necessarily need to take three minutes. The audience wants you to make them feel surprised; that is what they are waiting for. Films with a foreseeable plot encourage people to switch off - except when favourite actors are in them. Even comedy should be dealt with cautiously, sometimes less is more. Take the jury members of photokina videofun 2006 to paradise - let them have a share in your place of bliss. Now we say "start shooting". We are looking forward to receiving your contribution either on CD in .avi format uncompressed or on DVD. Closing date is 1 March 2006. After the first selection round the 30 best entries will be published on the homepage of Prophoto GmbH - www.prophoto-online.de. Then, internet users will be able to give ratings to the selected 30 films. It's worth sending in a film: altogether over 10,000 will be distributed among the 10 highest rated contestants; a first prize of 2,500 awaits the winner. What else should be observed? All film entries must be marked with the following details: Title of the film, date of shooting, name and address of the author. By sending an entry to the competition photokina videofun 2006 contestants confirm that they are authors of the respective films and that films are no older than two years. Entered films will be treated with utmost care but no liability is assumed for any loss or damage in the mail. By participating in this video competition contestants give their consent to the public performance of the films they have entered for non commercial purposes (presentations, press and public relations work within the photokina videofun 2006 and photokina). The copyright remains with the authors. Films entered in this competition are not returned. We intend to publish on the internet the names of 30 contestants who sent in the best videos as well as the 30 videos they contributed. For this reason only videos with contents, e. g. music possibly used, are admitted for which contestants have all rights necessary for such a publication (in particular copyrights, exploitation rights, rights of performing artists and rights to their own image of persons shown) or for which contestants have the necessary rights of use and assign these rights of use to Prophoto GmbH for purposes connected with the above-mentioned video competition. By sending in their video contributions, contestants give their consent to the publication on the internet by Prophoto GmbH and state that the rights of third parties are not infringed in any way. The decision obtained in the internet rating is final; no legal action is possible. By taking part in the competition photokina videofun 2006 entrants accept the conditions of participation. The organiser of photokina videofun 2006 is Prophoto GmbH who wishes to provide a platform for amateur filmmakers in Europe. Hello UNICA friends,
I have good news from Finland
The Finnish Federation has been publishing the Finnish Film and Video Magazine to its members. The magazine, called Filmaaja, has has been on the market about 50 years and comes out 4 times per year. But as the number of members has been dropping, these days the magazine only prints some 500 copies per issue. That is low. I have been giving out copies of a New Finnish Commercial Video-magazine: DV-Videolehti. (The last issue had a good picture story about the UNICA 2004 conference.) This magazine has been doing well, and it has got the commercial companies promoting their Video cameras and Editing software to advertise in it. The magazine prints some 7000 - 12.000 copies per issue. For the year 2005, these two magazines will be merged. So DV-Videolehti will contain pages about the Finnish Federation. That section will be called: Filmaaja, so it is like a magazine inside a magazine. This will give a great cost saving to the Finnish Federation and good service to the members of the Finnish Federation. Now they will get this new colourful DV-Videolehti magazine included in their membership fee which has also the Finnish Federation's Filmaaja pages in it. Best regards, Lauri Hirvonen (FIN), UNICA Committee Member Today (Monday 13th June 2005) the postal address of Finnish Federation has been changed. The new address is: Linnustajankuja 2 C 13, 02940 ESPOO, FINLAND. This is also the new home address for Lauri Hirvonen, the President of the Finnish Federation. |
