NORTH v SOUTH FINALISTS 1995

The North v South Competition Final (originally founded by the late John Wright, FACI) is between five entries from the north of Britain and five from the south.

NORTH
1. OUCH!
Stoke Cine and Video Society
A young man (Nigel Peever) with a dental problem tries various methods (short of actually going to the dentist!) to relieve the situation. His wife (Julia Prescott) is, sadly, less than helpful! Directed by Tyrone Williams.

Humour
9.mins

2. TAKING THE MEDICINE
Southport Cine and Video Society
One of 'The World in Focus' series, this deals with the NHS - and waiting lists - and centres on a particular waiting-room. Based on an idea by Barbara Marsh and Mike Waring.

Humour
15.mins

3. DEAD MAN'S CHEST
Stoke Cine and Video Society
From the title, you'll probably guess, me hearties, that this is a tale of treasure-trove - with a villainous Captain Herod (Nigel Peever, who also directs) holding his crew, including the cabin-boy Ben Dory (Matthew Watkins), to ransom so that he can have it all for himself. Costumes, swords and wigs all help the period (1787) atmosphere. Lots of fun!

Story
12.mins

4. SHEERLUCK JONES AND THE PRINCESS OF DARKNESS
Swan Movie Makers
A send-up of a certain famous detective who smokes a meerschaum pipe (Ken Harrison)! His partner, Dr Watsup, is played by Stan Batty, and their adversary, Liza Wake, is Dawn Owens. Script and Direction by Kevin Larkins.

Humour
21.mins

5. REVENGE
Stoke Cine and Video Society
A young man, David Finch (Nigel Peever), arrives late for work (again) one morning, and within minutes the works generator, which is his responsibility, fails (again!). As a result his boss sacks him instantly. The title tells what this movie is about ...

SOUTH
6. AD INFINITUM
Medway Movie Makers (Kent)
A group of friends wants to make an entry for a movie competition and eventually decide to make a film of the filming. Good acting all round and neatly done - it's sometimes difficult to work out which is the film and which is the film of the film! Directed by Jeff Friend and produced by Gwen Grindley.

Story
13.mins

7. ONE MORE SHOT
Seven Teign Movie Makers
This Russian roulette 'duel' between two men is brilliantly lit, shot and edited, building to an extremely tense climax - to which is added a lovely 'sting in the tail'! Written and directed by Ken Baylis.
BAVA Trophy 1996; IAC Gold Seal 1996

Story
6.mins

8. BIG DEAL
Lincoln Video Club
A group of gamblers get together to play five-card stud ... Directed by Chris Santer.

Story
8.mins

9. SOME YOU WIN
Teign Cine and Video Group
At noon, an old tramp (Ken Baylis) is pushing his belongings in his old pram when he picks up a coin, reading WIN on one side and LOSE on the other. He then experiences a series of unexpected incidents ... This is an interesting, surreal movie which creates its own atmosphere very economically without dialogue, but with effective use of sound. Written by Victor Vasey, directed by Kristian Digby and produced by Richard Wheeler.

Story
8.mins

10. THE FAIRFAX BEQUEST
Orpington Video and Film Makers (Kent)
Oliver Fairfax (Malcolm Mountjoy), a Lloyd's 'name', used to have an 1839 oil-painting in his family, which has gone. It is his great wish to get it back (legally!), against the instincts of his wife Grace (Annabelle Lancaster), because the story goes that the painting has a curse on it ... Screenplay by Reg Lancaster from an idea by Mike Turner.
IAC Gold Seal 1997

Donated by the competition organisers.

Story
