OPEN CLASS IAC 1990 : PART 1
Three extremely skilful entries in the Open class of the 1990 IAC International Film and Video Competition sent from the USA by the Council of International Non-Theatrical Events (CINE). Based in Washington DC, this organisation is dedicated to providing outstanding examples of American movie-making to international film festivals.
| 1. | BRIDGE/MOCT North Western University, Chicago & State Institute for Cinematography, Moscow The first-ever American-Soviet Student Film Co-production, completed in 1988; a heavily-sponsored project produced by Robert Kath, featuring the song Bridges of Trust by Collective Vision (USA) and Vladimir Kopisov (USSR). A young boy is searching for Truth and we watch the world through his eyes as he breaks down the wall of history to see his dream of the future. His goal is, of course, a life of freedom for everyone, symbolically portrayed by a young girl and a woman seen returning to their childhood, leaving hope for future events yet underlining the present realities. | 2. | DARKROOMS University of Southern California (USA) Rachel (Cheryl Slean) is acquaintance-raped by James (Greg Dietrich) at a college campus party. She finds that she is not just fighting her own shame but the pressure from her peers to keep silent at a time when she finds she must come to terms with what happened, regain her self-respect and go on with life. A finely-staged study of the emotional traumas of both the male and the female involved at the centre of the controversy, written and directed in 1988 by Elizabeth Passarelli at the University's School of Cinema-Television. | 3. | OUT OF THE WATER Mary Kuryla (USA) Penny (Holly Sampson) is on the brink of becoming a woman and becomes confused by emotionally-mixed messages. Her mother (Marilyn Dodds-Frank) is sexually indiscreet in her daughter's presence, yet, on the other hand, is extremely pious. Penny fixates on a stranger (Chris Shearer), slowly envisioning him as Jesus Christ. As the youngster tries to resolve her inner conflict for herself, we watch her enter the ambiguous world of adulthood. Transfer from 16mm film.
