BIAFF 1999 Awards Selection 3

A further selection of assorted award-winners in the 1999 IAC International Film and Video Competition, premiered at movie 99, held April 22-25, 1999, in Harrogate, Yorkshire.

1. YOU CAN NEVER BE TOO CAREFUL!
Orpington Video and Film Makers (Kent)
When a young woman (Joanne Dover) calls on the 'lady of the house' (Mary Whytock), for the purposes of a survey, she seems perfectly genuine even if (thanks to the society we live in) a few alarm bells do ring in our minds ... A neat idea, well shot and edited, graced by good performances. Directed by Colin Jones.

2. TERRA MINOTAURI (LAND OF THE BULLS)
Willy Van der Linden (Belgium)
An outstanding movie about one of the most interesting and attractive areas in France - the Carmargue. The flora and fauna are beautifully captured here, thanks to the camerawork and editing, enhanced by a well-delivered commentary (in English!) by Colin Howett. There is (as one might expect from the title) a sequence showing the two types of bull-fights in the region - one ending in a kill and the other not. The former is not dwelt on, but shown because it's a part of the local scene (the maker makes his own position perfectly clear, incidentally.)
UNSUITABLE FOR YOUNG CHILDREN (BULL-FIGHTING)

3. DIE SCHEINHEILIGEN (THE HYPOCRITICALS)
Sven Nagel (Germany)
This is a most unusual animation movie in the sense that it gives angle-poise lamps human characters (even to the extent of involving them in an 'eternal triangle'!).

4. THE AUTUMN YEARS
Teign Cine & Video Society (Devon)
An elderly man (Ken Baylis), having not long lost his wife, visits the cemetery. Subsequently, he wanders through the local park, lost in his thoughts, and has a series of encounters. Written and directed by Ken Baylis.

5. REIN GESCHÄFTLICH (STRICTLY BUSINESS)
Thomas Manglitz & Stephan Lenzen (Germany)
A mostly imaginative and amusing fantasy movie about, of all unlikely things, a man going to a pay loo - but a loo the like of which you have never seen before, and indeed, are unlikely to see again! There is certainly nothing to take offence over, here, only to laugh at and enjoy.
IAC International Award, Best Humour (Joint) Award 1999

6. PIPEDREAM
WHW Video (Isle of Wight)
This is about a group of elderly men (Boss: Stewart Murray; Dave: Declan Cleary; George: Les Knight) engaged in drug-smuggling who, because the authorities are getting too close for comfort, decide to go for one last 'big' one across the English Channel. An intriguing idea, nicely executed.

7. DER PECHVOGEL (THE UNLUCKY PERSON)
Rüdiger Schnoor & Wolfgang Wesemann (Germany)
A young man (Rüdiger Schnoor), having entered a film (!) competition, oversleeps (of course!) on the day the entries are due to be judged, so then has a battle with 'things' and people to get the precious super 8 movie delivered on time ... Some nice 'in' jokes along the way, also.
