The making of Hannah

The film won an International Medallion.

Editor's note: During 2005 Urbain battled with cancer, lost a lot of weight and for a time lost hope. Happily he rallied with the help of family and friends to make two top films: Cinemascope and Hannah.

Some years ago I took part in your festival for the first time. My entry was called Dimato. I had made that film working with Magda Verbist, one of the members of my club, Magic Four. It was about two gentlemen in their sixties who became very good friends and decided to live together on a barge. We were very successful with that film in Britain.

Last year I thought of making a similar film. Once again Magda's inspiration seemed to be indispensable to create emotion in such a story. The cooperation was great! In Hannah Magda is the grandmother. Little Hannah has to live with her for some time, but she doesn't feel at home there. Granny does everything to win a place in the little girl's heart.

The most difficult thing was finding the right location : a tiny house in a wood at a lake's edge. We found one, but from time to time we could not take any shots because of the noise of airplanes taking off and landing. As the story takes place in the "good old days" we also had to look for all kinds of objects that belonged to that period : an old pair of scissors, a discoloured photograph, a teapot and sieve, etc. Things that you can only buy at boot-sales and antique shops.

For those filmmakers who are interested in technicalities : I edited our film with Pinnacle Liquid Edition System, Version 6.5. We enjoyed making that film very much.
