Portrait of the late Mrs. Erika Haensli.ERIKA HÄNSLI
has departed this life and yet she will always be with us

Dear film friends

Mrs. Erika Hänsli passed away on 8th December 2002, being 70 years old, after fighting against an incurable form of cancer. In company of her husband Max Hänsli, she had been actively engaged in all UNICA activities for over 30 years. This gave her the opportunity, during all this time, to attend many UNICA events and make innumerable film friends. We have all known her as a very kind person, eager to please everybody and very much interested in film. She never missed any UNICA congress over all these years.

She has also been actively engaged in the preparation and management of two UNICA Congresses held in Switzerland, in Baden near Zürich and in St.Gall.Champion-Keller, Teufelsschlucht, Buffet auf dem Crap Son Gion, were highlights in her life and she had very pleasant memories of these important events. She also found great pleasure in thinking back on all the film friends she had made on the occasion of meetings, both in Switzerland and abroad.

Though nothing is eternal in this short life, we are grieved at the death of a person who was dear to us. The UNICA family will keep Erika Hänsli's memory alive.

NEWS FROM THE CICT - IMAGE & SCIENCE 2002

The language of Arts, the language of Passions: language was the heart of the "Affiche du Monde" Festival 2002.

Serge Michel, Michael Preiss and his wife. The event took place on 12th October 2002 in the Great Hall of the UNESCO offices in Paris during the closing ceremonies of the 19th International Conference on Image & Science organised by the Centre National de la Recherche Scientifique (Images-Media), under the aegis of CICT (UNESCO), the Council of Europe and the European Commission. It is within this framework that the Grand Prix of the "Affiche du Monde" Festival 2002 for a film from UNICA was presented to Michael Preis (DEU) of Dortmund for his film Die Stille Is Mir Laut Genug which was screened during the UNICA festival in Luxembourg.

Michael Preis accompanied by his wife, attended the event specially to receive this reward which also honours the German federation, the BDFA.

Michael Preis's film perfectly fitted the theme for this year, "language". The great human value of its testimony by a deaf young woman who was remarkably integrated in the community around her, in her city and in life ... was commended; as was the quality of the film's production.

After Kelou (IRN) in 1999, Pianissimo (ITA) in 2000, Dancing (ESP) in 2001, Die Stille Is Mir Laut Genug is the fourth film from UNICA to enter the first "Cinemathèque of Humanity" which CNRS at the CICT constitutes. It builds year after year, with works from film schools on one hand (107 participating establishments), and films from the amateur enthusiasts of UNICA on the other hand.

UNICA is delighted by the vitality of the partnership which we began in 1999, and the go-ahead for 2003 has already been given. The Conference of Image & Science will celebrate its twentieth anniversary then, and the theme for "Affiche du Monde" Festival 2003 will be "complexity".

Serge Michel. To your cameras!

Serge Michel
(FRA) - vice-president of UNICA & member of the executive committee of the CICT at UNESCO.

Die Stille Is Mir Laut Genug (Silence Is Loud Enough For Me)

Perhaps a soundless, but not a silent world. "We are not a pitiful group with a common destiny, but a self-assured, handicapped minority." This is the message behind this report about a deaf woman.

Horizontal Skip

Jörg Walther (DEU) won a bronze medal at UNICA 2002 for Horizontal Skip.

The film poses the questions: is there a reality and can man comprehend it? Patrick lets himself fall. He detaches himself from his human identity and starts to perceive his surroundings from another perspective independent of space and time. During his escape from drab everyday life he visits the locations of his wildest dreams. But who and where is he? Is he who he thinks he is?

Iranian Young Cinema Society logo.IRANIAN YOUNG CINEMA SOCIETY

In Iran, learning cinema by means of academic studies began about the turn of century. The first Iranian film college opened in the early 60s and gradually more institutes and colleges were added. Now, there are more than a dozen states and private centres for those who want to enter cinema with a background of schooling. One of these centres is "Iranian Young Cinema Society" ( IYCS ).It was established in 1974. The main activities of the society are:

  1. To train the enthusiastic youth in order to improve their cine culture.
  2. To organize an annual international short film festival.
  3. To produce and distribute short films

1- IYCS, in all its centers (almost 50 branches in whole country) establishes one or two semesters training courses for interested people in field of filmmaking, where the students will learn camera directing, scriptwriting, editing and photography.

2 - IYCS also organises an annual international short film festival; the 7th edition of it will be held on October 21st - 26th, 2002.

3 - In the beginning, IYCS mainly focused its activities on producing 8 and 16 mm films through establishing training courses. Since 1977, IYCS has expanded its activity in short filmmaking and encouraged mostly young filmmakers to produce short films in Beta cam, 16 and 35 mm formats. At the present time, IYCS is one the most important producers of short films in Iran, it produces short films in DVcam, Betacam, 16 and 35 mm formats and almost 700 titles have been produced in the last three years.

IYCS provides TV channels, universities, institutes and other organisations, who are interested in purchasing short films. The films produced by IYCS have got many International Prizes from different film festivals around the world.
