1st February	Closing date for the FESTIVAL OF NATIONS 2011 The Festival of Nations is one of the most important film festivals in Europe for non-commercial film makers. Last year it had more than 900 entries from 55 countries. It takes place in Ebensee a small town in the Salzkammergut region less than an hour from Salzburg. Films from authors, who attend the festival, are given preference. No entry fee. Screenings 12th-18th June. For details click here.

19th-27th March	FESTIVAL INTERNATIONAL DU FILM ANIMALIER - the international wildlife film festival is a pro-am one run by volunteers. It is prestigious indeed. There are separate prizes for amateur movie makers. The festival's closing date was 31st October 2010. The long lead time is because once the short list is chosen they translate the scripts and record new commentaries in French which are played with the films when shown to the public in the festival's home town of Albert in the Somme area of France. 7-8th May	S.A.M. Workshop Weekend - (Saturday: 9.30 am – 18.00pm, Sunday 10.00am – 13.00 pm) at Stirling Management Centre, University of Stirling. The workshop weekend will follow its successful formula with delegates working in groups on the Saturday to make a short film. The subject for the Sunday morning has not yet been decided. Overnight accommodation will be available at competitive rates.

30th June	Closing date for the NORTH THAMES ONE MINUTE MOVIE CONTEST - The idea of the competition is to produce an entertaining / funny film that lasts just 1 minute including all titles etc. It is judged by an independent judge and announced at the North Thames Movie Festival and AGM in late November. One of the entries (not always the winner!!) is chosen by NT to enter the Mini Mermaid.

21st July	Closing date for THORSAA FILM FESTIVAL (formerly The Big Gig) in Thurso, Caithness. This is a showcase for amateur, student and low-budget films - not a competition. No fee. Details. Festival event 24th September.

27th July	Closing date for THE KENT FILM FESTIVAL - details and entry forms on www.kentfilmfestival.com - festival screenings 24th September. 31st July	Closing date for THE ENVIRONMENTAL PHOTOGRAPHER OF THE YEAR a competition for still and video makers with an interest in the environment. Open to amateurs and professionals of any age and from anywhere in the world. No entry fee. Special awards for those under 21 and those under 16. 20th-23rd October		THE SCOTTISH REEL - IAC's CONVENTION AND AGM WEEKEND Hosted by The Scottish Association of Moviemakers (SAM) at Stirling Management Centre, Stirling. Thursday: Guided walk in the University Grounds and visit to the Wallace Monument followed by an evening's AV show. Friday: Visit the Famous Grouse Experience / Crieff Visitor Centre or The Falkirk Wheel. In the evening a screening of SAM movies, Saturday: Sail on Loch Katrine or visit the Scottish Parliament and Holyrood Palace. In the evening a Gala Dinner. 30th October		Closing date for the FIFA (Festival International du Film Animalier) in Albert, France - though the screenings will be in March 2012 the closing date is early to allow for professional translation of the selected films. Maximum length for amateur entries is 20 minutes. First registration costs 30 Euros, thereafter free.
