The North vs South competition for 2005/6 came to a popular conclusion on Sunday 29th January with a win for the North.

The film that carried the North to victory was produced by Tynemouth Video Society and was awarded the ‘John Wright’ trophy.

‘TELL US ABOUT IT’ is a comedy about a con-trick cleverly played on the members of an appreciation society.

The show was very well attended with over 60 people present who saw 14 films - 5 from the North and 9 from the South. For the first time since Newcastle ACA took over the running of the North section the audience agreed totally, on a ballot, with the judges verdict. The ‘belly’ laughs alone confirmed the judges decision!

The trophy is now in the hands of the North - let’s all try to keep it here.

Next years theme is ‘A DREAM COME TRUE’ - so thinking caps on and ‘Support the North’

Southern Heat Report

Having had to move the Southern Heat forward by one week from the date originally booked, due to the SERIAC Festival taking place on the same day, we were a little concerned whether this change would affect attendance.

We needn’t have worried. As 3.00pm drew near and the show was about to start, around 90 people filled the hall despite a few parking problems and diversions in Farnborough village due to the Christmas lights being switched on that afternoon.

There were 24 films entered this year and it was nice to see some of them coming from clubs who have not previously entered. Although the total running time was close on 4 hours, there was an equal number of dramas and comedies as well as some documentaries thrown in for good measure which helped to make up a varied and hopefully, entertaining show. Each two hour session was made up of 12 films, with a 45 minute tea interval in between.

Having spoken to the Northern Heat organisers the day before, it was interesting to hear that they would never consider making their two sessions longer than 50 minutes each for fear of the audience complaining the day was too long. Apparently, come 5.30pm, people start to walk. In the South, the opposite applies. Our experience has shown that the participating clubs expect, not only value for money but also their film to be screened. Having, in the past, travelled from as far afield as Falmouth, Nuneaton, Burton-on-Trent and Portsmouth, who can blame them.

The five films chosen by our judges, Dan Richards and Mark Blackman, to represent the South in the Grand Final are as follows:

999 by Epsom Cine and Video Society
Judgement Day by Surrey Border Film and Video Makers

The ‘Audience Vote’ competition was won by Wendy Empett of Medway Camcorder Club who came nearest to the judges winning order.

The Grand Final will be held on Sunday 29th January at the Village Hall, High Street, Farnborough, Kent. Doors open 2.30pm for a 3.00pm start. We expect to finish around 7.00pm. As well as the 10 finalists, we will also be showing the remainder of the Northern entries; a total of 17 films. We will also be announcing the theme for next years competition.
