Welcome to Harrogate. We have chosen Harrogate again for this Festival because of the friendliness of its people and the beauty of the surroundings.

If you choose to venture beyond the many screen attractions in our Festival you will find an attractive market town, within walking distance of our Festival Hotel. Harrogate rose to fame in Victorian times as Yorkshire's Spa Town with its reputation based on the health-giving waters of an Elizabethan Sulphur Well. It grew in splendour with elegant Victorian buildings and wide open spaces.

Today Harrogate has quite a different role as a holiday and business centre welcoming thousands of visitors from all over the world.

The hotel and its surrounding attractions.

THE GRAND FESTIVAL GALA on Saturday night is the highlight of the social side of the programme. Visitors look forward to meeting old friends from around the country, and abroad. This is always a happy occasion and after dinner, to add to your pleasure, there will be a delightful musical cabaret entertainment presented by Raymond Ellis.

QUALITY PRESENTATIONS: After dinner on Friday evening we will be entertained by the Premiere presentation of the winners of the Geoffrey Round Audio Visual Competition. On Saturday 4 mini-cinemas will show a vast selection of quality entries from this year’s IAC International Competition. But if you can only join us for one day then make it Sunday, 25th.April.

Throughout Sunday we will have the pleasure and anticipation of seeing the very best entries in the IAC British International Amateur Film Competition. Before Sunday lunch our guest speaker Don Atkinson (Nominated 4 times for BAFTA Craft Award) will share with us his experiences as a sound recordist on film and TV. By 5.30 the anticipation will be over. The Chairman will have opened the envelope and announced the winner of the prestigious Daily mail Trophy.

Guess Speaker: Don Atkinson A.M.P.S.

Don Atkinson is an independent sound recordist and audio consultant who has worked on films and television since 1958.

Starting with live broadcasts on Tyne Tees he experienced all sizes of studio and outside broadcasts. Moving to the film department he was awarded the RTS Award for Sports Newsfilm of the Year. He worked on "Whicker’s World" with Yorkshire Television for 7 years and one of these programmes led to one of four nominations for a BAFTA Craft Award for location audio.

Still with Yorkshire Television he helped design the first video dubbing area in the UK for audio gathered by the new single camera video units. In 1989 he became independent and formed Don Atkinson Audio Consultants, remaining operational on productions such as "A Touch of Frost" but also active in broadcast training. He is the author of "The Sound Production Handbook".

He has offered great support to amateur clubs in the Yorkshire area and has organised popular workshop sessions. He has arranged with Rycote, the windshielding specialists, to provide all Sunday guests with a CD about various audio subjects.

We are looking forward to seeing you at Harrogate.
